Soap and healthy skin products

Our handcrafted soap

We are a family based business making handmade soap. We began making these products fourteen years ago for our own family to enjoy. We read about the dangerous chemicals which are present in store bought soaps, and decided to learn to make our own. Then friends became interested in these products and we decided to start selling them at farmers markets and several small shops. All of our products are all natural, 100% vegetable products (except milk) and highly moisturizing and good for your skin.

What are the ingredients?

We use all vegetable oils: virgin olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, shea butter, apricot kernel oil, kukui nut oil, sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, & jojoba oil. There are no animal fats or animal products in the soaps, except the milk soap which contains milk, of course. Honey soap and gardeners also contain honey and/or corn meal.  We use sodium hydroxide to suponify the oils except our liquid soap which has potassium hydroxide. The soaps are made in small batches usually 3-12 soaps each depending upon the recipe. The only preservatives which we use are citric acid (vitamin C) and grapefruit seed extract. For coloring we usually use clays, micas or iron oxide.

Why Vegetable Soap

When we first began making soap we experimented with soap containing animal fat. We found that the animal fat made the soap have a very short shelf life. Within a couple months it was turning brown and unpleasant. Yet, do you realize that all of the soaps we found at our local grocer ten years ago contained animal fat (since it is very cheap and pure vegetable oils are much more expensive). Do you ever open a bar of soap from the store and find that it is starting to turn brown – of course not! Why? The soaps that are manufactured also contain other chemicals to preserve and even hide the natural decaying process.  Even the so called unscented soaps contain fragrance.

Why use handcrafted soap? Isn't the stuff from the store just as good.

The "soap" from the grocery store usually isn't soap at all, but rather a detergent. It contains processed chemicals and quite often, petroleum-based ingredients. These are not healthy for your skin. And your skin is your largest organ. Doctors even prescribe patches which contain medicines which soak through your skin to enter your body. Any other chemicals you place on your skin will soak into your body as well. Besides these, the component that is the very best for your skin - glycerin - is removed. However, handcrafted soaps retain glycerin, which occurs naturally in the soap making process. Your skin is your largest organ, it only makes sense to treat it well. Our naturally healthy soaps do not contain sodium laurel sulfate or any other dangerous chemicals. I had 2 different women tell me that their dermatologist told them to use unscented Dove soap.  So I read the label the next time I went to the store.  Guess what fragrance was one of the ingredients - to cover the smell.

Isn't Lye dangerous?

Lye is also known as sodium hydroxide. While all true soap is made with lye, none is contained in the finished soap. The oils and sodium hydroxide molecules combine to create a completely different substance - soap! All our soaps are "super-fatted" and perfectly safe they have been tested on our family even little babies.

Are all the bars the same?

No, our coloring is usually pure mica, which we buy in a powder form and it is impossible to put exactly the same amount in each batch. The colors will also change depending upon which oils are used in each batch. Most of our molds are made to create 3.75-5 oz. bars. When soap cures the soda ash will float to the top (this is the bottom of the bar since it is poured into a mold) this ash is cleaned off before packaging. This amount varies with different ingredients and even with the temperature and humidity in the room, so it will slightly change the size of the bar. Each bar is unique it is not a factory pressed model.

What about other cleaning products?

The largest organ on your body is your skin. It is the 1st line of defense against injury and infection. And it is also highly absorbent – that is why dermal-absorption patches work so well – they absorb immediately into the bloodstream – in fact, there is 70 times more drug potency used in a pill form than when a patch is prescribed.Poisoning takes place slowly, over a long period of time. The fumes and residue left behind from everyday products cause slow poisoning to your immune system. This steady “drip” is what causes your immune system to be attacked and weakened over time, thus causing you to become more susceptible to infection, disease and chronic illness. It is ridiculous to think we can live in this world without some exposure to chemicals – we are not fanatics. The concept is to REDUCE THE LOAD on your immune system by eliminating as many harsh chemicals as you can from your home and work environment.  It is very important to know what you are washing your clothes in --- Whatever is in your detergent, fabric softener, spot remover and whitener is going into your bloodstream. It would take 16 rinse cycles to get out all the detergent, etc. (the best washer on the market only rinses 3 times) so we have a lot of detergent, etc. left in our clothes (60%) that is being absorbed into our skin and bloodstream. Toxins activate once they become damp or wet again or wherever there is heat. Common ingredients found in most laundry detergents: - Sodium Silicate/Sodium Sulfate, Trisodium nitrolotriacetate - cause tissue damage, can trigger an asthma attack, are known skin irritants. - Ethanol, Ethanol amine, Sodium Hydroxide – all registered as a hazardous chemical, dangerous to the respiratory system, skin irritant, toxic by inhalation or ingestion and can cause damage to the kidneys. To this end we have also made laundry soaps and other cleaning products for our own use(they were too expensive and took too long to make for us to offer them for sale to others). However, after doing more research we have found a wonderful company which makes healthy yet affective cleaning products which are very affordable. In fact they are cheaper than what we could purchase at a store yet they are made with healthy ingredients. The cleaning products we used to use were healthy in that they did not contain harmful ingredients yet they did not have anything strong enough to prevent viruses or kill dangerous bacteria. Finally, we are happy to announce that we are able to purchase these products right over the internet, have them delivered to our home in a few days. They have even reduced the allergy symptoms several of our children used to experience. If you would like to be able to purchase these same wonderful, healthy products for yourself; send us an email.
